President and Founder David B. Crowley brings over ten years of leadership in the nonprofit sector to the founding of SCI. Prior to starting SCI, David served as Executive Director of Generations Incorporated, which under his leadership grew into a national model for intergenerational programming. He also started and directed the Kentucky Community Service Commission, a state entity appointed by the Governor responsible for AmeriCorps and other service programs. David graduated from Harvard College in 1991 with an A.B. in Government.

SCI Dorchester @ DotWell Site Director Rosanne Foley is an ardent supporter of the Dorchester community. She has worked for DotWell since 2001, becoming Director of the Dorchester Environmental Health Coalition, a grassroots initiative of environmental health and justice organizing and DotWell partner, in 2003. Rosanne’s prior jobs include the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation, the City of Boston Police Department and Boston Parks Department, and the National Park Service. Some of Rosanne’s recent activities include the Neponset River Restoration Citizen Advisory Committee, the Metropolitan Beaches Commission, the Fitness Committee of the Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness, the Dorchester Avenue Task Force, the Boston Urban Forest Coalition, the Lead Action Collaborative (steering committee), the Dorchester Historical Society (board), the Ashmont T Station Citizens Advisory Committee (co-chair), and the St Marks Area Main Street (former board, now committee member). She is a founding member of DotBike and of the Dorchester Arts Collaborative. Rosanne received a BA in history from Northeastern University, and a criminal justice degree from Curry College. Publications include The Dorchester Environmental Profile in 2003.

Director of School-Based Initiatives Thomas Powers manages health and wellness services in DotWell’s non-clinical programs at the health centers and in community schools through the Dorchester FAMILY School Initiative. He has managed community-based wellness programs including fitness, nutrition and asthma education. Tom began working at Dorchester House in August of 1998, and has wide-ranging experience in education and program development. He received a BA from Dickinson College in PA.

Director of Civic Health Doreen Treacy joined the DotWell CivicHealth Institute in 2001, 9 years after launching a successful consulting venture and 8 years after purchasing her first home in the Dorchester community. The collusion between her community activism and professional life have informed each other ever since. As a consultant to the City of Boston, she authored a course book and delivered trainings for the popular Homebuying 101 program a program that became a benchmark for homebuyer education standards statewide. In addition to the Homebuying course, Ms. Treacy also developed and facilitated numerous financial seminars to empower individuals to become stable, long term, and engaged members of their communities. She has been a featured presenter at a HUD National Best Practices Conference, a National Tax Coalition conference, a National Community Technology conference and at a statewide Federal Reserve Bank Conference. Additionally, her work with first-time urban homebuyers was featured in Money magazine.

Since joining the CivicHealth Institute, she has entered into a partnership with Social Capital, Inc to increase civic engagement and social capital in the community. With a team of community activists, she has played an active role in the revitalization of the MBTA Red lines stations in Dorchester and particularly in the creation of the Shawmut Corridor Gardens, a transit oriented beauty spot and teaching garden. She has spearheaded a Fiscal Health initiative partnering with the City of Boston, FDIC, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, IRS, and local nonprofits to launch a city-wide, neighborhood-based Earned Income Tax Campaign. Her newest initiative, Wealth Access for All, weaves opportunities for higher education, family financial education, and access to the EITC into a comprehensive asset development strategy. She is a founding member of the Boston EITC Coalition, on the Board of Directors of MCBC (Massachusetts Banking and Community Council) where she is also a co-chair of its Banking subcommittee, and a Board of Directors member of MIDAS She holds an BS from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst and an M.Div from Boston University.

SCI Dorchester @ DotWell AmeriCorps 2009-2010 Team


Outreach and Technology Coordinator Lauren Anderson joins us from Oklahoma to serve the Dorchester community through coordinating the SCI Dorchester Volunteer Program. Before serving at SCI Dochester at DotWell, she majored in International and Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma. While a student at OU, Lauren worked for the Oklahoma Scholar Leadership Enrichment Program. She also served as the Work of Women intern at the nonprotfit organization World Neighbors based in Oklahoma City. Lauren is excited to learn more about Dorchester as she familiarizes herself with the Boston area. Please contact Lauren if you are interested in volunteering in Dorchester or if your organization has a need for volunteers.

Outreach and Technology Coordinator Lauren Ames is excited to join the SCI Dorchester team with Dotwell. She will be busy updating the website throughout the next ten months, so please contact her if there is something new you would like to see on the website. She will also be recruiting volunteers to serve in many capacities around Dorchester, so please contact her about volunteer opportunities as well. Prior to serving with SCI Dorchester through AmeriCorps, Lauren served as Editorial Assistant with Boston Review magazine, and as Morning News Intern with WBUR, Boston's National Public Radio station. Lauren graduated from Rice University in 2007 with a dual-major B.A. in Political Science and Hispanic Studies.

Arts and Multi-Media Youth Leadership Coordinator Maggie Casey is excited about developing an Arts and Multi-Media program for Dorchester House Multi-Service Center that is both fun and enriching for teen participants. Maggie is originally from Santa Monica, California, but recently graduated from Oberlin College with a Comparative American Studies major and a minor in Studio Art. As an Oberlin student Maggie was actively involved in youth development programs such as America Reads and Oberlin Street Law. Last summer Maggie worked as a Youth Team Leader for the C5 New England Leadership Camp. She is happy to be in Dorchester working with youth, art and service, and will gladly tell you about the different programs offered at the Teen Center if you send her an e-mail or stop by Dorchester House.

Outreach and Technology Coordinator Scotland Huber, though not a native New Englander, has made his home here since 2005. Graduating from Gordon College, Wenham, MA in the spring of 2009 with a B.A. in Philosophy, he is excited to join DotWell as a member of SCI Dorchester. Scot's main responsibilities will lie with updating the weekly eBlast, photographing events, providing design and blog posts for the website, and helping recruit volunteers and reaching out to the community. Scot has previously volunteered at Greater Boston Food Bank and various service organizations in Philadelphia (his native city), as well as serving as a Resident Advisor, Student Ministry Leader, and Photographer at Gordon College. He is excited to be a part of DotWell and SCI's vision for healthier lifestyles and community involvement, especially here in Dorchester.

Youth Leadership Coordinator Keith Pernell is happily joining us from Connecticut. Keith graduated from the University of Connecticut in the spring of 2009 with a B.A. in Sociology. He has served with youth for five years in various projects. He served as a baseball instructor for the Blue Devils Baseball Camp for two years. He has also served for the Umass Boston Upward Bound Program, a college prep program, as a Resident Supervisor. Keith will be providing leadership training to a core group of youth who will organize projects to engage other peers in Community Service Learning. Although Keith has only worked in Boston for the past two summers he is excited to have the opportunity to help strengthen the community of Dorchester through civic engagement and community service.

DFSI Coordinator of Community Linkages Laura Santel is happy to be back at DotWell after volunteering last year with the Clemente Program and the DotWell Women Writers’ Workshop. A native of St. Louis, Laura recently graduated from Tufts University with a B.A. in Art History. Laura is serving with the Dorchester FAMILY School Initiative (DFSI), a partnership between the Lee, Holmes, and Fifield elementary schools along with DotWell, FAMILY, Inc., the Dorchester Neighborhood Service Center (DNSC), Wheelock College, and Open Circle. As Coordinator of Community Linkages, Laura will help connect each of DFSI’s partners to each other and to school communities, promoting a stronger community by providing necessary support to families and students.
