Brooke Charter Schools | March 4 Deadline

Brooke Charter Schools are currently accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year.  The Mattapan campus, accepting new K2 and 5th grade students, is temporarily located at 7 Elkins Street in South Boston (transportation is available for students) but will be moving to 150 American Legion Highway, the former Lena Park Community Development Corporation building, in fall of 2014.  Our Roslindale campus, located at 190 Cummins Highway, is accepting applications for K2 students.  The final application deadline is Monday, March 4th, 2013 at 6PM. >> Read More

Chinese culture and language Classes | March 2

Would you like to learn more about Chinese culture or study Mandarin at the beginner level? Starting Saturday, March 2, 2013, the Confucius Institute is offering three non-credit courses. Classes will be on the UMass Boston campus and taught by native speakers.

 

Chinese Culture: Past & Present

As an ancient country undergoing massive social changes since the late 70's, China is drawing attention from the world. This course is an introduction to 5000 years of Chinese culture and offers perspectives on how Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and other philosophies of life have deeply influenced Chinese culture.

Bach to the 21st Century | Feb 22

Aaron Larget-Caplan will perform solo and chamber music with fellow Boston Conservatory faculty members Berit Strong and Olav Chris Henriksen (guitar), Sharon Leventhal (violin) and Boston Conservatory students Nicole Parks and Farley Kelly-Masterton (violins), Faith Jones (viola) and Nora Karakousoglou (cello). The program includes four works specially written for Larget-Caplan, including two by Boston Conservatory faculty members Jim Dalton and Kevin Siegfried.

Lucky Strike Exhibition | Feb 22

Lucky Strike is an exhibition at Howard Art Project featuring the Master of Fine Arts thesis project of Joe Joe Orangias. The project was initiated by his research at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University on how architecture and design choreograph the body, and influence social experience. Focusing on the candlepin bowling alley as a distinct case of such structural influence, Orangias has salvaged the only remaining materials from the former Lucky Strike Lanes in Dorchester, MA with the generosity of the property owner. These materials have been repurposed into a series of paintings, sculptures, and a collaboratively written Lucky Strike Manifesto. >> Read More

Lincoln Day | Feb. 10

Join the festivities for Lincoln Day 2013! There will be drills and demonstrations by the B Company 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the 22nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the United States Sanitary Commission Boston Branch (the 22nd Massachusetts ladies civilian group).

 

 

A rededication ceremony will take place for the newly restored Lincoln Cabin lead by First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. A commemorative, limited edition postcard, featuring historic photos of the cabin, will be distributed to visitors. First Lady Lincoln will also mingle with guests and inspect and address the troops.

Sandtray Worldplay Sessions for Survivors & Providers

The Peace Institute offers Sandtray Worldplay to survivors of homicide victims and service providers as an alternative therapeutic practice in which people express themselves and experiences through a natural, self-guided, self- healing process. Sand provides a mean of self discovery.  "Sandplay" is used for growth, healing and spiritual development. Participants get to choose different colored and textured sands, and photos are provided as keepsakes for reflection and healing.
