Bird Street is the major provider of intentional programming for out-of-school and after school activities. Body By Brandy 4 Kidz

Website:

bodybybrandy4kidz.com

Mission:

Brandy Cruthird established Body By Brandy 4 Kidz in 2005. Spurred by alarming reports of childhood obesity and the related health risks, she decided to research these disturbing statistics, and, after working with several hospitals, found it apparent that change was necessary. Locally, 35% of children under the age of six are overweight or obese - 15% more than the national average. Believing that these numbers were simply unacceptable for our community to ignore, Brandy developed the Fitness in the City and Fit Kidz programs. We believe that the only way to change these statistics is to encourage our children to exercise and maintain a balanced diet. As a result of this vision, every day fitness programming is offered at the gym to those in need.

Mission:

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is a national organization making schools safer for ALL students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

GLSEN strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. We believe that such an atmosphere engenders a positive sense of self, which is the basis of educational achievement and personal growth. Since homophobia and heterosexism undermine a healthy school climate, we work to educate teachers, students, and the public at large about the damaging effects these forces have on youth and adults alike.

We recognize that forces such as racism and sexism have similarly adverse impacts on communities, and we support schools in seeking to redress all such inequities. GLSEN seeks to develop school climates where difference is valued for the positive contribution it makes in creating a more vibrant and diverse community.

We welcome as members any and all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, or occupation, who are committed to seeing this philosophy realized in K-12 schools.

GLSEN Massachusetts (formerly GLSEN Boston) has been serving Eastern Massachusetts for over 15 years. In the past three years alone, we have trained 1100 youth, 1200 teachers, and 45 schools whose classrooms include more than 13,000 students. Our work focuses on three overarching goals: programming, advocacy, and community organizing.

The Youth On Fire drop-in center was established in the fall of 2000 to provide a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for homeless and street-involved youth. YOF is open five days a week and serves young people between the ages of 14 and 24. Often the behaviors necessary to survive on the streets put these youth at a higher risk for contracting HIV. YOF serves the physical and mental needs of these youth.

The center offers basic necessities, as well as prevention information on HIV, STDs, Hepatitis C and other diseases associated with high-risk behavior. YOF has onsite hot meals, clothing, showers, and laundry facilities, as well as weekly medical care, mental health counseling, and referrals to community resources. The ultimate goal of YOF is to help as many youth as possible to have a healthy lifestyle, remain HIV-negative, and seek greater stability through permanent housing, employment, or school.
