Special ESOL Workshop @ AFAB, Apr. 19/20

AFAB (Haitian Women of Boston)Haitian Women of Boston (AFAB) will hold a special, two-day ESOL workshop on April 19 and 20. Lunine Pierre-Jérôme, Ed.D, will lead the class, which takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day.  Dr. Pierre-Jérôme is a past recipient of AFAB's Haitian Women Achievers as well as the Drylongso Award from Community Change, Inc. She has taught at Cambridge College since 2005 and coordinates the ESL program.

-JobNet provides career assessment and counseling, job readiness activities and job search and placement services. A multilingual staff works with automated job banks to create career opportunities for job seekers on all rungs of the career ladder. -Downtown Adult Literacy Program tutors adults from 18yrs and older one-on-one on basic reading skills and GED preparation. Students also learn basic computer skills, enjoy field trips and guest lectures, and take part in Boston's annual Adult Education and Literacy Week. -Young Parents Program serves 16-to-21-year-old parents and expectant parents. The program provides individual counseling and support, GED preparation, parenting skills classes, job and career development counseling and support groups.

Twenty-seven Department of Early Education and Care licensed childcare providers in Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Hyde Park, and Roslindale, who can have up to six infants to 6-year-olds in their homes, have contracted with Bartholomew Family Child Care to serve at present 130 children. Quality childcare is provided in a safe and nurturing environment. This allows parents to feel secure as they work, attend school, and address other personal issues. Provider supports include career development, technical assistance, monitoring and evaluation referrals and assistance with basic supplies. With their comprehensive and holistic care, providers develop family-support services and prepare children academically and socially to enter primary grade school.

Mission: 

The purpose of the program is to provide opportunities and services to the culturally diverse families in the Dorchester neighborhood. It is a comprehensive Head Start program in partnership with parents. It serves families for twenty-five hours weekly, assisting them in self-sufficiency and success in life. The program's philosophy is to promote self-help and self-sufficiency. Its goals are as follows:
1. To provide an education that improves children's ability to think, reason, communicate and develop self-esteem through meaningful social interaction with peers and teachers.
2. To provide integrated services in the areas of education, health, nutrition and social and mental health.
