The Girls Reading Literature Society, Feb. 10

The Girls Reading Literature Society, the best girls-only book club in town, kicks off this week at five branch libraries, including the Fields Corner Library! GRLS (Girls Reading Literature Society) reading groups are made possible through a partnership with UMass Boston's Department of English, and with support from the Boston Public Library Foundation.

GRLS attracts pre-teen girl readers by creating a sense of a “girls-allowed-only” club. In addition to reading and discussing books, the UMass Mentors help the participants record their reactions to the stories in reading diaries. The diaries, provided by UMass, will include arts and craft activities, such as doodling and collage making. The books selected for GRLS include both graphic novels and chapter books that display girls engaged in reading, drawing, and overcoming obstacles, by relying on their wits and creativity. Titles include Doodlebug: A Novel in Doodles by Karen Romano Young and The Books of Elsewhere: the Shadows by Jacqueline West...
