"Hunger Then, Hunger Now: Black and Green" event, May 6

All are invited to the 18th annual Black and Green in Boston bridge-building event this Sunday afternoon, May 6th in Dorchester. The discussion portion will cover the Great Irish Famine, the current famine in Somalia and local hunger in Massachusetts.

Black and Green in Boston is co-organized by the Irish International Immigrant Center and the Montserrat Aspirers as a unique event bringing together Boston’s diverse communities for an afternoon of making new friends, discussion, entertainment and sharing a meal. It will take place from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Montserrat Aspirers Hall, 364 Washington St., Dorchester (Four Corners).

The Spot in DOT, Nov. 6

Designed and led by teenagers, The Spot in Codman Square is a teen cafe held on the first Sunday evening of each month. Raffles, video games, dominos, free food, music, dancing, and more happening at 89 Southern Ave (Syria Temple community room). Special 20 minute program each night. Open from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Free.

Free Basic Bike Maintenance Class, Oct. 30

Do you want to learn how to change a flat tire? Have questions about what you can do to get the best performance from your bike? Want to continue to ride even though the halcyon days of summer are gone? "Preparing Your House of Worship for Winter: A Workshop by the Boston Preservation Alliance" will take place on Saturday, October 29th, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 14 Cushing Ave. Dorchester. What can you do to protect your historic religious building from the rigors of the winter ahead? LOTS! Come hear Jeff Shaw of Donham & Sweeney, Architects, and Tom Nutt-Powell from Massachusetts Interfaith Power and Light (MIP&L) discuss quick, easy, and inexpensive ways to minimize weather-related damage and save energy and money at the same time! Topics to be covered will include protecting foundations, walls and roofs, windows and doors; the different challenges facing masonry, wood, and metal; and how thermostats, interior "storm" windows, and added insulation can cut your energy costs and make your congregation and other users more comfortable. Putting Your Garden to Bed (Leyland Garden), Oct. 6

The end of the growing season is just around the corner!
