Defensive Aids in Situations of Help | January 22

Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins is empowering women* to protect themselves, and each other through DASH ( Defensive Aids in Situations of Help).
 
D.A.S.H. is a free self-defense training seminar for women who seek a greater sense of security and confidence.
 
The seminar will be held  Wednesday, January 22nd from 5:30-8:30pm at the Grove Hall Community Center (51 Geneva Ave in Dorchester, Ma 02121).

African Drumming Workshop with Mohamad Kalifa Kamar | December 19

African Drumming Workshop with Mohamad Kalifa Kamar, Thursday, December 19, 2013, 4 – 5pm. This event will be held in the Grove Hall Branch of the Boston Public Library (41 Geneva Avenue, Dorchester, MA 02121)
 
Mohamad Kalifa Kamara, a master drummer and dancer, began his career in Gambia where he started his own dancing and drumming group. For this workshop, Mohamad will explain to youth the history of drumming and how drums are used as a form of communication in African villages. Participants will also have the opportunity to play Mohamad’s various drums. For children ages 6 and up.
 
This event is free and is open to the public. Space is limited; please register with the children’s librarian.
 
This Out-of-school Time program is sponsored by the Boston Public Library Foundation.
 

Solstice Celebration | December 21

Saturday December 21, 2013 at 6-8pm BNC will host Solstice lanterns at Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary.
 
Throughout time, people have come together to celebrate the shortest day of the year and welcome the lengthening days ahead. At Arcadia we also have a tradition: we gather at sundown from 6-8pm for music and community unity. Ward off the cold with the warmth of the bonfire, sip hot cider, and listen to music.
 
This is a free event, however, please bring a nonperishable food item for the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. Registration is not required for this program.

Friday, December 27 at 10:30am, the Stephen E. Smith Center at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum will present  Mr. Punch’s Christmas Carol at the the Crabgrass Puppet Theatre. The beautifully crafted puppets will tell the tale of the man who hated Christmas and put profits before people. Outrageous holiday hilarity with ghosts, giggles, geese and Tiny Tim too!
