Haitian Mental Health Conference May 5

The Haitian Mental Health (HMH) Network and Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP) have joined to present Trauma and Mental Illness in the Haitian Community: Cultural Condsiderations for Developing a Broad Clinical and Research Agenda. This conference is happening Saturday, May 5 from 8:30am to 4:30pm at the MSPP and will bring together health care experts, researchers, educators, clinicians, and community advocates whose work can inform the development of a comprehensive agenda for Haitian mental health in Massachusetts and beyond. Keynote speakers include: Dr. Guerda Nicolas (Associate Professor/University of Miami) and Dr. Ronald Jean-Jacques (President/Haitian Psychological Association). Admission is $120 which includes lunch and counts as 6 CE credits. Please read after the break for list of presentations and contact information.

Panel and workshop presentations will include:

  • Impact of historical traumas on the adaptation of Haitian immigrants in the U.S.
  • The role of cultural belief systems in understanding health-seeking behaviors of Haitian individuals
  • Culturally-bound syndromes and somatic manifestations of mental illness in the Haitian community
  • The use of art therapy with Haitian children earthquake survivors
  • Clinical interventions to address Haitian clients' mental health needs
