Youth Peace Conference: Think Outside the Block, May 8

On Saturday, May 8, 2010, some 700 Boston youth will come together at Teen Empowerment’s 18th annual Youth Peace Conference, Think Outside the Block, Change is Around the Corner at the Jeremiah E. Burke High School, 60 Washington St., Dorchester from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Click the image at right to see the full size flier.

The Boston youth organizing the conference will call on those in attendance to stop fighting one another and instead focus their energies on fighting to preserve funding for youth jobs, teen programs and quality education. The event will feature speeches and rap and poetry performances by teens interspersed with an original play. There will be opportunities for youth to offer ideas for solutions to pressing community issues and to sign on to campaigns to take action on those issues.

The Youth Peace Conference began in 1993 as a way to bring together Boston teens to help solve the epidemic of gang violence at the time. That first conference produced a lasting truce among five rival gangs and set the stage for a dramatic improvement in the lives of thousands of youth.

The Conference, sponsored by WilmerHale, The Boston Globe, The Boston Public Schools and JP Licks is open to the public. Tickets are $2 in advance and $3 at the door. Contact jen@teenempowerment.org or 617-442-4684 for more information.
