Mission: 

The purpose of the program is to provide opportunities and services to the culturally diverse families in the Dorchester neighborhood. It is a comprehensive Head Start program in partnership with parents. It serves families for twenty-five hours weekly, assisting them in self-sufficiency and success in life. The program's philosophy is to promote self-help and self-sufficiency. Its goals are as follows:
1. To provide an education that improves children's ability to think, reason, communicate and develop self-esteem through meaningful social interaction with peers and teachers.
2. To provide integrated services in the areas of education, health, nutrition and social and mental health.
3. To serve healthy breakfast, lunches and snacks to ensure good nutrition.

How to get involved/application guidelines and procedures: 

Walk-in application process. Your child must turn 3 on or before September 1, 2006. Please call Dorchester Head Start (617)282-1100 for more information.
To apply, you must bring the following:
-Child's Birth Certificate
-Social Security Cards for all family members
-Medical Insurance Card
-Two proofs of residence(phone bill, utility bill, etc)
-2 Proof of income (4 recent pay stubs or Welfare letter of verification)
-Application are taken: Monday through Friday 8:30 A.M.- 3:30 P.M.
-Vouchers are acceptable for the Extended Day Program.
-If you get paid bi-weekly bring 2 proofs of income
-If you get paid weekly bring 4 proffs of income

Mission: 

Our mission is to oppose the war in Iraq and US militarism in general; to build a multi-racial peace movement throughout the neighborhoods of Dorchester; and to work against the war at home, including violence, budget cuts, racism and political repression. Viet-AID's after-school program runs during the academic year of the Boston Public Schools (BPS), from 3:00PM-6:00PM each day for 3rd to 7th grades. The beginning portion of the day we provide homework help, support and tutoring. Any additional time at the end of the day is spent on academic enrichment and fun, cultural activities.

All student in the After School Program are referred to Viet Aid by partner elementary and middle schools. For more information on joining the After School Program, please contact Jessica Ranucci at 617-822-3717 x 26 or HoaMai Nguyen at 617-822-3717 ext. 22.

The Steppingstone Academy is a free, summer and after-school academic program that prepares motivated Boston schoolchildren who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to gain admission to and succeed at public exam and independent schools. The Steppingstone Academy offers 14 months and 26 months of tuition-free rigorous summer and after-school classes for current Boston schoolchildren in 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grades. Families interested in applying attend a Family Information Meeting [held in October, November or December] - students are nominated by teachers, principals and community leaders [in 2009, due Friday, Dec. 4]

Key Programs Offered: 

Created Elder Friendly Business District program to improve businesses, infrastructure, access and services to encourage older adults to shop in Fields Corner.

Launched "Don't Spot the Dot" anti-litter campaign with Mayor Menino in April 2007 to promote keeping Fields Corner clean. Distributed brooms and dustpans to 110 businesses in the district. In the second year of the campaign, gave presentations to local area schools and after school programs.

Recruited 10 businesses to participate in the Boston Community Change Card program, a loyalty program for local businesses that gives rebates to cardholders and their chosen nonprofit beneficiaries.

Collaborated with the Dorchester Holiday Celebrations Committee on annual tree lighting event and promoted businesses offering discounts during the holidays.

Organized high-profile annual gala event, Dancing with the Stars of Boston, with celebrity dancers, professional dancers and celebrity judges at UMass Boston.

Co-sponsored successful "Martinis on the Avenue" fundraisers with St. Mark's Area Main Street.
