Bowdoin Geneva Food in the Hood Meeting | May 9

There will be a Food in the Hood Meeting on May 9 at the Bowdoin Street Health Center, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. The meeting will focus on gearing up for the summer season! The group will host the fourth Healthy Corner Store Challenge - Transformed Fried Chicken and Healthy Mac & Cheese. The meal will feature whole grain breadcrumbs and reduced fat cheddar cheese, both newly available at America's Food Basket on Bowdoin Street!

Boston's Bridge to Excellence Mentoring Program Billboard Unveiling, Mar. 7

Clear Channel has donated billboards across the city to showcase the creative work of Boston's Bridge to Excellence MentoringPrograms. UMass Boston teamed up with Boston’s Bridge to Excellence Mentoring Program and the BCYF Cleveland Community Center in order to give young people a chance to envision their future and show how mentoring will help them achieve their goals. Students created posters showing how mentoring will help them achieve their goals, to be combined into two themed billboard designs: "Mentoring = Student Success" and "Mentoring Matters." The unveiling will be at 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Bowdoin and Geneva.

On Wednesday, December 14th, Food in the 'Hood Committee will be hosting a meeting on Wednesday, December 14th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bowdoin Street Health Center. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to contribute to the Mayor's Boston CAN Share campaign in which BSHC is participating. This year's drive will help to support food pantries across the city and to support Boston Bounty Bucks, the program that provides low-income families with access to healthy fresh foods by doubling their SNAP benefits at farmers' markets! Are you interested in farmers' markets, community supported agriculture, community gardens, etc.? Food in the Hood monthly meetings are 2nd Wednesdays, except for in July, August, September and October when the farmers' market is happening. Bowdoin-Geneva Community Day, Aug. 13

Violence Intervention PreventionBowdoin-Geneva Community Day will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Reverand Allen Park in Dorchester across St. Peter’s Church from 12 to 4 p.m. (rain date, August 14, 2011). The community day features ample entertainment, free food (hamburger, hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream) and fun. Boston Police K-9 dogs will be present, as will a fire truck, face painters and more. There will also be resources there for the community. This event is open to the whole Dorchester Community, for all ages, young and old. This event is being put on by Bowdoin/Geneva Violence Intervention Program, along with St. Peter’s Teen Center and St. Peter’s Parish. With questions, contact Susan Young by emailing

Extended day is available from 7:30-5:30pm.


The purpose of the program is to provide opportunities and services to the culturally diverse families in the Dorchester neighborhood. It is a comprehensive Head Start program in partnership with parents. It serves families for twenty-five hours weekly, assisting them in self-sufficiency and success in life. The program's philosophy is to promote self-help and self-sufficiency. Its goals are as follows:
1. To provide an education that improves children's ability to think, reason, communicate and develop self-esteem through meaningful social interaction with peers and teachers.
2. To provide integrated services in the areas of education, health, nutrition and social and mental health.
3. To serve healthy breakfast, lunches and snacks to ensure good nutrition.

How to get involved/application guidelines and procedures: 

Walk-in application process. Your child must turn 3 on or before September 1, 2006. Please call Dorchester Head Start (617)282-1100 for more information.
To apply, you must bring the following:
-Child's Birth Certificate
-Social Security Cards for all family members
-Medical Insurance Card
-Two proofs of residence(phone bill, utility bill, etc)
-2 Proof of income (4 recent pay stubs or Welfare letter of verification)
-Application are taken: Monday through Friday 8:30 A.M.- 3:30 P.M.
-Vouchers are acceptable for the Extended Day Program.
-If you get paid bi-weekly bring 2 proofs of income
-If you get paid weekly bring 4 proffs of income
