'Voices of History' at Adams Street Branch Library Jan. 30

Members of the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston will be at the Adams Street Branch Library on January 30, 2012! Starting at 6:30 p.m., a quartet of singers will be performing music from different periods of an entire millenium, from 1100 to 1994 with the motifs of classical, folk, and multi-cultural genres. BPS Task Force Forum @ BPL Dec. 13

Boston Public Schools (BPS) Health and Wellness Task Force invites you to attend Reducing Health Disparities to Close the Achievement Gap: A BPS Forum. The forum will take place in the Boston Public Library's Rabb Auditorium on Tuesday, December 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. At the forum, Mayor Menino and BPS Superintendent, Carol R. Johnson, will provide remarks. Dr. Charles Basch, Richard March Hoe Professor of Health Education, Columbia University Teachers College, will give the keynote address, "Healthier Students are Better Learners: A Missing Link in School Reform." The forum will conclude with a roundtable discussion with several community leaders, including City Councilor Ayanna Pressley and Boston Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

By attending the forum, you will learn about "Healthy Connections," the district's health and wellness strategic plan, engage with educators and community partners that work to reduce health disparities and close the achievement gap, and help identify opportunities for community partners, funders, and other key stakeholders to support and collaborate with BPS on efforts to improve student health and wellness. Lowell Lecture Series: Nell Irvin Painter @ BPL

Nell Irvin Painter will be giving a lecture as part of the 2011-2012 Lowell Lecture Series at the Rabb Lecture Hall in the Central Boston Public Library. The lecture will be held on December 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Nell Irvin Painter, a graduate of Harvard University, went on to become the Edwards Professor Emeritus of American History at Princeton University and directed the program in African-American Studies from 1997 to 2000. She has written extensively about the American South, and is the author of seven books and many articles. The theme of the 2011 - 2012 Lowell Lecture series is "Remembering the Civil War." The event is part of the Boston Public Library's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The Copley Square Branch of the BPL is located at 700 Boylston Street in Copley Square. Come to the Grove Hall Branch Library from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 15 to celebrate Peter Reynolds' book, The Dot, and learn about art and imagination. The Civil War gets old and history marches proud in Dorchester! Read Your Way to Fenway with the BPL, Deadline Jul. 22

By spending some of their summer days reading, hundreds of Boston young people between the ages of 5-17 will earn the chance to win tickets to see the Red Sox play at Fenway Park. Beginning June 1, young readers can visit any Boston Public Library location or go online to www.bpl.org/summer to pick up an application for the annual Read Your Way to Fenway summer essay contest. Kids need only read a minimum of three books and write a brief essay about a favorite. Applications and essays are due to any Boston Public Library location by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22. Winners will watch the Red Sox up close on the afternoon of Sunday, August 28, against the Oakland Athletics.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Wally the Green Monster will celebrate the contest at the Grove Hall Branch of the Boston Public Library at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15. "Creating an Imaginary Landscape" at Grove Hall

The Grove Hall Library (41 Geneva Ave) is currently exhibiting work by Boston artist and teacher Linda Niemann King. This exhibit, "Creating an Imaginary Landscape," features multi-media juxtapositions of earth and sky. King writes, "This body of work began with a series of photographs. Living in an urban setting, sometimes it seems that there is no beauty to be found in my surroundings. One day, looking up at the sky, I realized there is beauty after all. In the sky is a constant shifting, easily accessible beauty. The photographs of the sky are then collaged with drawn and painted imagery creating an imaginary landscape."
