Free Community Concert at the Strand Theatre | Jan 2, 2017

Mayor Marty Walsh has invited three-time Grammy nominee Boston Baroque to perform its fourth annual Free Community Concert at the Strand Theatre (543 Columbia Road, Dorchester) on Monday, January 2 at 2pm. Bring your family and friends as the orchestra plays “Music for Royal Fireworks” by Handel and two sparkling works by J. S. Bach, featuring violin virtuoso Christina Day Martinson. Opening up the imagination to the sights and sounds of an actual fireworks display, "Music for Royal Fireworks" was written for King George II of England in 1749. The event on January 2 is free, but tickets are required.

The Boston Ballet’s Department of Education & Community Initiatives is thrilled to present the 7th annual performance of Boston Ballet at the Strand Theater!

Boston Ballet’s annual performance features an exciting repertoire that includes selections from their season and original works performed by Boston Ballet’s company, Boston Ballet II, Boston Ballet School, and students in the Department of Education and Community Initiatives.
 
Tickets are ONLY $10 and include entrance to an interactive pre-show event. This is always a great event for families and a unique opportunity to rethink ballet and see what the Boston Ballet has to offer!

Romeo and Juliet at the Strand Theatre | May 21-30

"Shakespeare OFF the Common" is an innovative 3-part arts program created in collaboration with the Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism, and Special Events to foster community interaction!

This year's Shakespeare OFF the Common programming includes:

1. A series of workshops created for classes in BPS that introduce Romeo&Juliet to students from an actors point of view, starting in March

2. A production of Romeo&Juliet by CSC2 at the Strand Theatre in Dorchester

3. Three art fesitvals, called "Fair Verona" hosted by three Boston Boys and Girls Clubs

 

Come to the screening of Romeo&Juliet at the Strand Theatre! There will be FREE student matinees starting at 10AM from Thursday May 21st to Friday May 29th!

Fiddlehead Theatre Company, the resident theatre company of Boston’s historic Strand Theatre, will present a special benefit performance on Friday, March 20 entitled This is the Moment: Jekyll and Hyde in Concert.  This elegant evening will celebrate Fiddlehead’s residency at the Strand while benefiting the theater company’s ongoing education programs and community events.  The evening’s program will feature a pre-performance masked cocktail party on the Strand stage (masks provided), followed by a concert performance of the Gothic musical Jekyll and Hyde.  The performance will feature a full cast and live, 30-piece orchestra.   Tickets are available for both the party and performance, or guests may attend just the live performance.

Mayor Walsh's Press Conference in Upham's Corner | April 28

On Monday, April 28 Mayor Walsh will host a press conference under the Strand Theatre marquee located at 543 Columbia Road in Dorchester. This event will begin at 11 am. Join Mayor Walsh, local residents, businesses, and community partners to celebrate some of the exciting things happening in Upham’s Corner, including the Columbia Road improvement project, support for existing business community, new restaurants, Strand Theatre improvements, among many other things. 7/4 Venezuelan Ensemble | April 18

On Friday, April 18 the Boston Philharmonic & Conservatory Lab Charter School will present 7/4 Venezuelan Ensemble. This event will take place at the Strand Theatre located at 543 Columbia Road in Dorchester beginning at 7:30 pm. At the beginning of 2011, 4 Venezuelan trumpet players all products of the Venezuelan System of Children and Youth Orchestra decided to explore and conquer new musical frontiers.

The 7/4 Venezuelan Ensemble has innovative musical and artistic voices which started with the use of trumpets in genres not often featured, like the Argentinean tango. Other innovations include creations or arrangements influenced by deep investigation of musical styles of countries such as Cuba, Mexico and the United States. This is a free event, come enjoy the styles of the 7/4 Venezuelan Ensemble.
