Kids with Asthma Can Swim

 

Kids with Asthma Can Swim (Starting October 18th, every Wednesday and Thursday 4:00-6:00pm, until January 3rd).  Kids with Asthma Can Swim is a FREE program combining asthma education and swimming lessons to improve the health and well-being of children with asthma. Arthritis and You: Can We Talk? | June 28

Circle the City Event | June 24

On Sunday, June 24, Circle The City launches with a kick-off event in Franklin Park! The event will be held from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Demonstrating an innovative model connecting conservation and recreation, Circle The City is an event which exemplifies healthy living in the city and improved accessibility to urban green spaces. The event will include free activities for all ages, such as:

  • Fitness and Yoga classes, Zumba and Hula Hooping

  • Street Hockey clinics with the Boston Bruins and Bruins Defenseman Andrew Ference.

  • Bikes and instruction with Boston Bikes

Free Heart Disease Screenings at STEC | June 23

On Saturday, June 23, Sportsmen's Tennis and Enrichment Center is offering free heart disease screenings! The event will be from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and will include free health info and free counseling. All Screenings are free of charge. No registration necessary.

Skin Cancer Screenings | July 21

Join the Dorchester House Multi-Service Center for a first time ever skin cancer screening.
Did you know that the lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 1 in 50 for whites, 1 in 200 for Hispanics, and 1 in 1,000 for blacks? Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Melanoma accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases. But it causes most skin cancer deaths. This event is free!

Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition | May 8 2012

The Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition held its monthly meeting on May 8 at the Mildred Avenue Community Center. The meeting began with a welcome and introductions. Everyone shared their name and favorite place in Mattapan.Theresa Jordan and Sonia Carter discussed plans for Mattapan Moving for Life. A description of the Fairmount Greenway Project and update on the Neponset Greenway from Eva Joseph and Vivien Morris. There was also discussion of activities and outlets for youth in Mattapan, with updates for Vigorous Youth and The Mattapan Patriots Flag Football team. The Healthy on the Block Corner Store Initiative, Farmers Market, and Mobile Market Project were discussed. >> Read More

Nail Salon Permit Assistance @ Viet-AID March 5

On Monday, March 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Receive one-on-one assistance from Viet-AID and Boston Public Health Commission staff will assist you with your nail salon permit application! Viet-AID is located at 42 Charles Street, Dorchester MA 02122. The event is part of the Safe Nail Salon Project.

You will need to bring:

Salon Use and Occupancy Permit from Boston Inspectional Services Department

Flammable Storage permit from Boston Fire Department

Salon license from Board of Cosmetology

Copies of cosmetology licenses for all persons working in the salon this year

Written description of ventilation system and plan for improving indoor air quality in the salon

A check for your permit fee

Healthy Dorchester - A Call to Action, Mar. 6

Healthy Dorchester is a new Dorchester-wide initiative to improve health in our community! Be a part of the action to create a healthy, fit and safe Dorchester. On Tuesday, March 6, from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. a meeting will be held at 450 Washington Street to discuss the future plans of Healthy Dorchester. A healthy lunch will be provided!
